What is the CIVIC Contextual Metadata Lab?
The Contextual Metadata Lab is the applied research group leading CIVIC's development of Context-Aware Systems (CAS) frameworks and connected technologies. The Contextual Metadata Lab is led by CIVIC’s global network of multi-disciplinary practitioners, scholars, and industry experts trained in Context-Aware practices.
Together, we collaborate with selected member organizations and offer access to emergent workspaces and unpublished materials while creating opportunities for applied learning, custom project support, and exclusive benefits to our partners.
For non-member organizations, the Contextual Metadata Lab offers a range of expert-led workshops and custom experiences to fit your needs.
What is Context-Aware Systems?
Context-Aware Systems is a field of research and applied practice developed by Civic Software Foundation that considers how digital infrastructure can contain and evolve situated knowledge. Rooted in real experience and developed through dozens of case studies implementing technology projects, CAS methods center an equity-bedrock approach to more deeply understand and clarify embedded assumptions which can distort the structures, interpretations, and impacts of data.
